Bobo Doll experiment

Method/design:

Matched pairs design, Lab experiment

Participants:

36 boys and 36 girls aged 3-6 years old from Stanford Uni nursery

They were all previously tested for their aggression

Procedure:

A lab experiment was used in which the independant variable was manipulated

  • Aggressive role model shown to 24 children
  • Non-aggressive role model shown to 24 children
  • No role model show to 24 children (control)

Stage 1: Modelling

In the expedrimental Conditions, Children were individually shown into a room where they were presented with toys to play with (potato print and pictures etc) for ten minutes, whilst either:

1. 24 children (12 girls 12 boys) were shown a male or female role model aggressively playing with a 'bobo doll' and using a hammer in some cases shouting "POW BOOM"

2. 24 children (12 boys 12 girls) watched a male or female role model play nicely with toys, ignoring the 'bobo doll', usually playing with trinker toy set in a quiet and subdued manner.

3. The final 24 (12 girls 12 boys) werent exposed to any role model and were the control group.

Stage 2: Agression Arousal:

All children (including control group) were intorduced to attarctive toys. Two minutes later the exoerimenter told them that these toys are their best toys and are reserved for other children.

Stage 3: Test for delayed imitation

In the next room included non-aggressive toys
