B603 Religion and Human Relationships

Roles of men and women in a Christian family

The Lord God said “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable helper for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

Wives … be submissive to your husbands … Husbands in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner. (1 Peter 3:17)

There is neither … male nor female for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:25)

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent. (1 Timothy 2:1 – 14)

Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children. (Titus 2:4)

There are many important women in the Bible like:

Old Testament - Deborah who was a prophetess, the only female judge in the Bible and leading Israel.

New Testament - Mary Magdalene was a follower of Jesus and witnessed his crucifixion. She is mentioned 12 times in the within the four Gospels, more than some of the Apostles.

Any woman who acts in a way that she cannot give birth to as many children as she is capable of, makes herself guilty of that many murders. (St Augustine 6th Century CE)

Roles of men and women in the Church

Timothy and Paul write that women should not be heard in Church and that Women should learn in silence and humility.

However Jesus lived amongst women and broke social taboos of the time such as making a woman a priest. I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the Church in Cenchreae. )Romans 6:1)

Why the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t allow women to be priests (they can still be Eucharistic Ministers, servers or readers)

Why the Church of England does allow women to be priests

Jesus and his disciples were all men

Jesus had female followers and some thought he had women disciples

Hierarchy of the Church reflects this

Jesus appeared to women after the resurrection

Pope (successor to Peter) is a man

Jesus treated women as equals to men

At Eucharist, the Priest represents Jesus so a woman cannot perform this ceremony

In the New Testament, women called Priscilla and Lydia had authority in Church

It used to be seen that women were unclean (menstrual cycle) so couldn’t go near the altar

Marriage and marriage ceremonies

Faith, hope and love abide the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

Readings – To remind the couple and guests of the sacredness of their wedding

Vows – An earnest promise that represents that marriage is for life and permanent. In the past women had different vows than the men: obey him, and serve him,
