- If a pathogen enters the body, our immune system tries to destroy it
- Vaccination involves introducing small amounts of dead or inactive forms of a pathogen; this stimulates the WBCs to produce antibodies. If the same pathogen re-enters the body, the WBCs can respond quicker to produce the right antibodies, preventing infection
- Herd Immunity- if a large population of people is immune to a disease, the spread of the pathogen is reduced and may even disappear. Herd immunity is when most of the population is vaccinated against a disease so not everyone needs to be as the disease is less common
