The Cardiac Cycle

The heart pumps blood around the body by contracting and relaxing. Blood can't flow in the wrong direction because there are valves to stop this from happening.

The sequence of events that we count as one single complete heartbeat is called the cardiac cycle. Here are the four steps;

1. blood flows into atria
