In order to survive, organisms need to compete for resources.

These resources include food, shelter, a mate, and general dominance.

Competitng for these things is competing for similar ecological niches.

An ecological niche is how an organism fits into its environment. It is different for every species, and is based on where it lives, what it feeds on, etc.
