The sun provides energy for life on earth.

Plants use the light energy from the sun to photosynthesise and create energy for themselves.

The energy that the plant has consumed from the sun then passes on through the food chain as that plant is eaten.

However, not all of this energy is passed on from the plant, as the plant uses some of it to stay alive.
