The meaning of Hindu identity
- Hinduism is a flexible and adaptable religion; does not impose rigid prescriptions upon its followers. However, certain key beliefs define a person as being a Hindu:
- 1. A dharmic lifestyle (spiritual and selfless, not materialistic and ego-centred)
- 2. The acceptance of pluralism- being open to the idea of others following different pathways including non-religious ones
- 3. Leading a disciplined family life and showing care for the elderly
- Codes of conduct are not set in stone, they continue to evolve
- Identity can be enhanced by participating in religious ceremonies and festivals
- A Hindu may wear certain traditional dress e.g. tunic for women, loin cloth for men
- A Hindu may show their allegiance to a particular movement by a forehead mark called a tilak
- Identity is also enhanced through family get-togethers to celebrate festivals/ weddings etc.
- Pilgrimages may create a sense of belonging
