• Filter theory is where the choice of partners is affected by factors that limit the availability of potential partners from a field of desirables to a field of availables
• There is therefore a series of factord that help to thin down the field from those who are desirable to those who are available in order to discount anyone who is too different
• Social demography is the first filter which focuses on individuals who we are realistically likely to meet and interact with. This is likely to be those who we live near us, who we work with, those with the same religion and similar eonomic background etc.
• Anyone who is too different is therefore discounted as a potenial partner and those who we have similarities with are considered as communication will be easier
