This quotes portrays Atticus's understaning and compassion for other people and how unless we can truly see things from their view point then we have no right or athority to judge them. In telling Scott this piece of knowledge Atticus's wisdom is continuely being highlight as telling someone a life lesson such as this one at such a young age will most likely stay with them for life and will teach them how to handle difficult situations in later life.

this qoute from Atticus portrays his wisdom as all mockingbirds do is sing beutifully and Atticus has recognised this quality and knows that it is considered a sin to kill them as they cause no harm to anyone.
