ATP as a supplier of energy

There are several advantages of using ATP in providing energy compared with using glucose directly, these are:

1. Hydrolysis of ATP to ADP only involves one reaction that releases energy immediately, however, the breakdown of glucose involves many reactions and takes longer for energy to be released.

2. Only one enzyme is needed to release energy from ATP, many enzymes are needed to release energy from glucose.
