OPTICAL AND TRUE BINARIES:

A binary star is a pair of stars that appear close to each other in the sky. There are two types of binaries:

optical doubles and true binaries.

Optical doubles are not actually together, but appear so from our line of sight from here on planet earth. The majority fall into this category.

True binaries are two stars which are rotating about a common centre.
