Hard Engineering: Building a type of sea defence that works against the natural energy of the coast
Sea Wall (Curved or not curved): Aim to absorb wave energy and reflect the energy back out to sea. They must be continuous or hydraulic action will effect any gap. They are a effective barrier again flooding but do need a outlet so water doesn't accumulate behind them
Rock Armour/Rip-Rap: Large boulder piled at the base of the cliff face. They absorb wave energy and reduce erosion
Gabions: Are wire mesh cages filled with boulders. They work in the same way as RipRap
