PROCEDURE: (1951,1955) Asch used 123 male American students. There were between 6-8 p'pants at a time, with one naive p'pant and the rest confederates. Each p'pant took part in 18 trials and on 12 of these, the confederates gave the incorrect answer.
FINDINGS: the naive p'pant gave the incorrect answer 36.8% of the time. 25% did not conform once, meaning 75% conformed at least once. In post-experiment interview, most claimed they had conformed due to NSI (fear of rejection)
VARIATIONS: 1. Group size Asch found with 3 confederates conformity rose to 31.8%, but tha addition of further confederates made little difference, meaning small majority is not sufficient but no more than 3 is needed.
2. Unanimity a dissenting confederate was introduced and he gave right answer sometimes and wrong answer sometims. Conformity dropped by a quarter meaning the dissenter allowed the naive p'pant to act more independently as it broke the majority
3. Task difficulty: when he made the lines more similar in length, conformity…
