Sensory memory:

  • Encoding: we probably have sensory memory stores for each sense, but most psychological research has tended to focus on the iconic store (the sensory store for visual information) and the echoic store (the sensory store for auditory information).
  • The Iconic store has a duration of about half a second, but the echoic store can retain information for 2-3 seconds.
  • Duration: Info decays after 2 seconds (Sperling's grid of numbers and letters).
