POSITIVE
- If the explanatin is that there are monoamine deficiencies, and drugs that replace those deficiencies work, then this is evidence for the explanation.
- The different monoamines link to the symptoms differently and treatment reflects those differences, again supporting the evidence. E.g. anxiety, compulsions, and a lack of interest, energy or concntration can all be explained by a lack of monoamines.
NEGATIVE
- There are drugs (opipramol) that affect depression but whose action is not related to monoamine neurotransmitters, putting the monoamine hypothesis in doubt.
