EPISODE FOUR SUMMARY (900-1030)
- Antigone is emphasising how she will never be married = added sympathy as it is a CORRUPTION OF PHYSIS.
- Antigone compares her death to Niobe's = need for glory? Arrogance?
- Chorus tells her she is not one of the gods, but she dislikes this and gets defensive, believes she is alike to them.
- Chorus suggest she may be a product of Oedipus' curse = Antigone latches onto this.
- Creon is unmoved by her, tells them to take her to her tomb quickly.
- Antigone has a long speech = talks about mother/father and brothers Polynices and Etocles and the power of the gods/dike = questions again what law of the gods she has broken.
- Also suggests she would never have behaved the same way for her husband or her children = slight reversal here but BIG HYPOCRISY, not a complete peripetia but a change in the views she is expressing to a massive degree = GOES AGAINST HER SUPPOSEDLY STRONG VIEWS OF PHYSIS AND DIKE.
ANTIGONE DERIVES GREATER SYMPATHY
- Talks of how she will never have a wedding-song and Chorus exarberate this from the outset = emphasise how "no withering illness laid you low."…
