Tourist numbers are rising, 7413 in 1996/1997, 46,000 in 2007/2008.

Things that attract tourists;

  • Scenery - eg, iceburgs
  • Wildlife - eg. pengiuns and whales

Environmental Impacts of tourists;

  • They trample plants, disturb wildlife and drop litter.
  • Tourists could introduce species or diseases that wipe out existing species.
  • Spillage of fuel from ships could kill species. 

Measures to protect Antarctica;

1) The Antarctic Treaty
