Setting: Manor Farm
Mr Jones: Neglectful "Too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes"
Represents: Tsar Nicholas II who ruled Russia from 1894 - 1917
- Thoughtless
- out of touch
- harsh
While he is drunk and sleeping the animals hold a meeting lead by
Old Major, a pig: A "middle white boar"
Represents: Karl Marx who wrote the Communist manifesto in 1848 which described how the working cass would need to have a revolution but he died before the revolution takes place
- Only appears in chapter one so doesn't see the rebellion happen
- Wants freedom and equality
- However, Old Major's vision of animalism never happens
The meeting is held in the barn, everyone attends except
Moses, the raven
Represents: the Russian Orthodox Church; Moses not attending the meeting symbolises the split between the Church and the State
In Old Major's speech
- Mentions his dream
- Passes on his wisdom about life
- Then returns to his dream
- "Our lives are miserable, labourious and short"
- "No animal in England is free"
- "Man is the only creature that consumes without producing"
