Here is what I would comment on:

'But tonight he could only make out one hole, because through it, a small star shone through it' - I interpret this as that there will never be many opportunities for Anil, but there is some hope for him through the one small star through it where there is a glimmer of hope for him.

'His parents would never think to look up and gape at a star' - they have no dreams, unintelligent people with no aspirations in life, probably as they have had to go through the harsh reality of life in the simplistic rural area.
