• Portuguese kept colonies of Mozambique and Angola in Africa but fighting Angolan nationalists since early 1960's
• After right wing government in Lisbon overthrown, nationalists promised independence
• Portuguese tried to establish interim Angolan government made up of nationalist representatives to help towards independence in 1975
• Coalition included MPLA (Marxist Movimento Popular de Libertacao de Angola), UNITA and FNLA (Frente Nacional de Libertacao de Angola)
• Foreign intervention began in June 1974-Chinese sent 120 military advisers to aid FNLA and USA provided $300,000 in covert funding in Jan 1975
• MPLA was receiving funds and arms from the Soviet Union and Cuba sent military instructors to support MPLA
• Three nationalist groups had collective aim of independence but broke down when Portuguese began removal
