Edward and Normandy
France was very different to now back in 1060. Normandy was an independent dukedom. The duke of Normandy was obliged to the French ruler. This didn’t stop regular wars though. Between other French Dukedoms or other counties e.g. Brittany, Flanders and Boulogne.
King Edward had a close relationship with Normandy as his mother, Emma, was from there. Once the Vikings took over England in 1016 Edward went there on exile and lived there…
