Sakharov and Solzhenitsyn
- Most high profile dissidents of the Brezhnev period.
- Sakharov advocated human rights, Solzhenitstyn was a Russian nationalist and devoted member of the Russian orthodox church.
- Represented the two great threats: the doctrine of human rights and Russian nationalism
- Sakharov: circulated an essay in 1968 Reflections on Progress, arguing the soviet union should respect human rights- KGB restricted his right to travel and the gov. reduced his salary.
- Sakharov gave full report of the intimidation to the NY Times.
- By end of 1968 Sakharov's case was so well known the KGB could not arrest him but they orchestrated a press campaign against him
- He was kept under constant surveillance and eventually sent into internal exile in the city…
