Androgyny and the BSRI

Androgyny - balance between masculine and feminine traits, e.g. someone competitive and assertive at work, but caring and sensitive as a parent

The Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) - Sandra Bem's way of measuring androgyny (1974)

  • Likert rating scale
  • 60 traits (20 masculine, 20 feminine, 20 neutral)
  • Either score as masculine, feminine, androgynous or undifferentiated

Bem suggested high androgyny is related to better psychological health

  • :( Oversimplifies a complex concept - gender identity reduced to single
