ARISTOTLE'S UNDERSTANDING OF REALITY
- We learn about reality through observation of the physical world
- If anything other than this physical world exists, we have no way of knowing about it
- Reality can be explained in four different ways = 4 causes, which explains the phenomena of the physical world
ARISTOTLE'S FOR CAUSES (AETION)
- Material cause = what its made from (chair is made from wood and glue)
- Formal cause = feature or shape something takes (chair has a square seat and straight back)
- Efficient cause = activity that make something happen and 'actualises potential' = (wood has potential to become a chair)
- Final cause = purpose - good if achieved its telos = (chair is a good chair if it is comfortable to sit on)
