Sound and images can be sent as analogue or digital signals, but digital technology is gradually taking over.
Information is converted into signals
- Information (things like your voice on a phone or the pictures of a TV programme) is converted (changes) into electrical signals before it's transmitted
- It's then sent long distances down telephone lines or superimposed (mixed) onto EM waves
- It's them sent out as either analogue or digital signals
Analogue signals vary but digital is either on of off
- An analogue signal can vary continuously
- This means it can take any value in a particular range
