Analogue and Digital Signals

HideShow resource information

Sound and images can be sent as analogue or digital signals, but digital technology is gradually taking over.

Information is converted into signals

  • Information (things like your voice on a phone or the pictures of a TV programme) is converted (changes) into electrical signals before it's transmitted
  • It's then sent long distances down telephone lines or superimposed (mixed) onto EM waves
  • It's them sent out as either analogue or digital signals

Analogue signals vary but digital is either on of off

  • An analogue signal can vary continuously
  • This means it can take any value in a particular range
  • Digital signals can only take
