Anaemia and Thalassemia
Clinical Symptoms of Anaemia
- g/dL = grams of haemoglobin p decilitre of Plasma
Common Symptoms -
- Unexplained fatigue and loss of energy
- Characteristic pallor, coldness, possible yellowing of skin + eyes
- palpitations and shortness of breath (dyspnea) esp during excercise
- dizziness + faitness; headache
90% of anemic ppl in developing countries. It is a huge issue in countries such as India were 1/5 of maternal deahts is caused by anaemia.
Symptoms + signs of anaemia on:
Cardiovascular System:
- Angina
- Intermittent claudification - spasmic clampin in calf muscle
CNS:
- Headache - can lead to accidents in older ppl
- fainting, tinnitus, decr ability to concentrate etc. more sever in olde rpatient for symptoms
- Mild and moderate anaemia --> 8 -12 g/dL
- Severe anaemia --> <8 g/dL
Most sever form is orthotnaeia – v ill person can’t lie flat in bed bc they get so breathless when they do – sign of the heart failing.
Classification of Anaemias
System 1: Physiology
- blood loss like undetected haemorrhaging - anaemia consequence
System 2: Morphology
- Normal cells is Normocytic
MCV = Mean Corposcular Volume - i.e. red cell volume
Fl is 10 to -15 ( a v tiny scale). In general the scale of size is 80-100fl.
- Under 80fl the red blood cells are said to be microcytic…
