Can be primary, secondary or tertiary depending on how many Hs on the N have been replaced

  • Amines are weak bases
    • Each N has a lone pair
    • Can accept a proton, H+
    • Form dative covalent bonds when accepting protons
  • Reactions:
    • react with acids to form a salt:
    • CH3CH2NH2 (ethylamine) + HCl > CH3CH2NH3+Cl- (ethylammonium)

Preparation of primary aliphatic amines:

Warm halogenoalkanes with an excess of ammonia using an ethanol solvent - nucleophilic sub.
