Amines

 Can be primary, secondary or tertiary depending on how many Hs on the N have been replaced

Basicity

  • Amines are weak bases
    • Each N has a lone pair
    • Can accept a proton, H+
    • Form dative covalent bonds when accepting protons
  • Reactions:
    • react with acids to form a salt:
    • CH3CH2NH2 (ethylamine) + HCl > CH3CH2NH3+Cl- (ethylammonium)
