using a GEIGER COUNTER experiment:

  • To see how far radiation can penetrate in the air AND what materials absorb it.

To experiment how far the radiation can travel. --> and backround radiation must be taken into account:

  • 1) Measure the COUNT RATE (no. of counts per second) without the radioactive source present. This means that the radiation only being counted here is the BACKROUND radiation. This is the backround count rate- rate due to BACKROUND RADIATION itself.
  • 2) Then add the source in place and the radiation going through the Geiger tube measures the count rate. SUBTRACTING the backround radiation from the radiation of the SOURCE gives the count
