All alcohols contain a hydroxyl group (-OH).
A homologous series of alcohols (Alkanols) begins with methanol and has the general formula of:
Cn H2n+1 OH
Properties:
They are useful fuels which burn cleanly and produce CO2 and H2O.
They are useful solvents.
They are useful for cleaning and disinfectants.
They dissolve in water and produce a neuatral reaction. (This is thanks to the shared hydrogen bonding between the two).
