Reactions of Alkanes
Combustion: exothermic:
- Alkane(g) + O2 (g) --> CO2(g) + H2O (g).
- Blue flame - bunsen burner complete combustion of methane
Incomplete combustion:
- Alakane(g) + O2(g) --> CO(g)/C(s) + H2O(g).
- Occurs if not enough O2 present.
- Bunson yellow flame - incomplete combustion methane + oxygen as carbon impurities
Problems
- Car engine: incomplete combustion occurs --> green house gases, C0 posinours
-Petrol burns at very large temp - enough energy for nitrogen to react with oxygen
- N2(g) + O2(g) -->…
