- America had joined war in 1917 so they hadn't suffered as badly as Britain and france
- Didn't want to punish Germany too harshly as this would lead to another war
- Wanted a fair/lasting peace based on Wilson's 14 points
- Wilson didn't always understand european relations/politics
- Little support at home - which forced Wilson to compromise
