USSR aims

• Reparations from Germany - suffered immense damage, 25 millin casualties
• From protection against future German attack, Stalin held on to land annexed from Poland and handed over German territories to Poland to compensate
• Aimed to reintegrate the Baltics and bring Romania and Bulgaria into the orbit of the Soviet Union
• Wanted friendly regimes with East Europe: direct control of Poland, Romania and Bulgaria with fully Communism, coalition governments with moderates in Yugoslavia, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Finland to act as bridge, and a non-Communist Western Europe to include Greece
• Dissolved the Comintern to tell allies that he is no longer supporting global revolution…
