Plot Synopsis

The INSPECTOR arrives at the house of a middle class family celebration to question them about the death of a young girl- EVA SMITH. Through the Inspector, Priestley reveals that all involved have had a hand in her death, a chain of social responsibility. ARTHUR BIRLING sacked her from her job in his factory for asking for a pay rise. SHEILA BIRLING had her sacked from her job in a department store due to her petty jealousy. GERALD CROFT kept her as his mistress for a summer, before leaving her to fend for herself. ERIC BIRLING got her pregnant and tried to help but was desperately immature and couldn't face his parents. SYBIL BIRLING refused her aid from her charity due to her prejudice and spite. Eva killed herself, and the inspector dishes out the truth over who is to blame.
