  • Concerns about global climate change, depletion of finite resources, population growth, waste management, pollution and disparities in wealth led to the UN setting up an Earth Summit in Rio in 1992.
  • At this summit, attended by 179 nations, a set of guidlines was developed.
  • The guidelines aimed to promote development along the line of the Bruntland Report 1987.
  • The agreed guidelines became known as Agenda 21.
  • Agenda 21 provided a framework to tackle social and environmental problems including air pollution, deforestation, loss
