Adaptations and Survival

Desert animals have adapted to save water...

  • Large surface area:volume - able to lose more heat
  • Produce small amounts of concentrated urine - less water lost
  • Make hardly any sweat
  • Very thin layers of fat underneath their skin, camels keep most in their hump
  • Large feet to spread their weight across the sand - easier to walk
  • Sandy colour - for camouflage

Artic animals have adapted to reduce heat loss...

  • Small surface area:volume - reduces heat loss
