Active Transports is the opposite of diffusion

Active transport is the movement of particles against a concentration gradient (i.e. from an area of lower concentration, to an area of higher concentration) using energy released during respiration

Active transport, like diffusion and osmosis, is used to move substances in and out of cells. For example, active transport is used in the digestive system when there is a low concentration of nutrients in the gut, but a high concentration in the blood

  • When there's a higher concentration of nutrients in the gut they diffuse naturally into the blood
  • Sometimes, theres a lower concentration of nutrients in the gut than there is in the blood
  • This means that the concentration gradient is the wrong way…
