The Opening stage directions

the opening directions set the scene.  The Birlings have money, but their good solid funiture, is heavily comfortable and does not make the room cosy or homelike.  It sounds like a hotel.

Arthur Birling is a rather "Provincial in his speech" (He has a regional accent) and his wife is his "social superior".  Some landown families were prepared to marry to a lower social family in return for money.
