- Venice was gained through diplomacy and war
- Prussia's chancellor, Bismarck, had a desire to control Germany so he wanted to gain as much support as he could before going to war with Austria
- he met with Napoleon at Biarritz October 1865 and it was here that Napoleon promised to remain neutral in the up-and-coming war
- in return for Napoleon's neutrality, Prussia agreed to hand Venice over to them
- to make a 'no-lose' situation, Napoleon also met with Austria secretly and said he would be neutral with them as well in this war
- Prussia managed to crush Austria after declaring war on them
- July 3rd - destruction of Austria by Prussia at Sadowa
- Austria was forced to hand over Venice as promised to France
- France then gave it to…
