  • Venice was gained through diplomacy and war
  • Prussia's chancellor, Bismarck, had a desire to control Germany so he wanted to gain as much support as he could before going to war with Austria
  • he met with Napoleon at Biarritz October 1865 and it was here that Napoleon promised to remain neutral in the up-and-coming war
  • in return for Napoleon's neutrality, Prussia agreed to hand Venice over to them
  • to make a 'no-lose' situation, Napoleon also met with Austria secretly and said he would be neutral with them as well in this war
  • Prussia managed to crush Austria after declaring war on them
  • July 3rd - destruction of Austria by Prussia at Sadowa
  • Austria was forced to hand over Venice as promised to France
  • France then gave it to…
