Acid Rain
Causes
- Burning of fossil fuels
- smelting of metals in old industrial plants
- exhast fumes
Acid deposition consists of dry deposits of pollutants - sulphur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide
They mix with precipitation to produce wet deposits of sulphuric acids, nitric acid and compounds of ammonia (acid rain)
Effects
- Damage to conifers - yellowing of needles and strange branching patterns
- Acidification of lakes and streams - killing aquatic life reducing biodiversity
- leaching of toxic metals (aluminium) from soil into rivers &lakes also killing fish - also reduces nutrient content of soils so plants can't grow
