Acid Rain

Causes

  • Burning of fossil fuels
  • smelting of metals in old industrial plants
  • exhast fumes

Acid deposition consists of dry deposits of pollutants - sulphur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide
They mix with precipitation to produce wet deposits of sulphuric acids, nitric acid and compounds of ammonia (acid rain)

Effects

  • Damage to conifers - yellowing of needles and strange branching patterns
  • Acidification of lakes and streams - killing aquatic life reducing biodiversity
  • leaching of toxic metals (aluminium) from soil into rivers &lakes also killing fish - also reduces nutrient content of soils so plants can't grow
  • Decay of building…
