Effects of fear arousing communications- Janis and Feshback (1953):

  • Aim: Top study the motivational effect of fear arousal in health promotion communications.
  • Sample: Entire Freshman class of a large connecticut high school (age 15)- roughly equal females and males.
  • Method: Divided into 4 gourps- 3 shown 15 minute illustrated lecture on tooth decay- 4th group acted as a control. 3 experiemtnal groups were given different forms of the lecture.
  • Form 1- strong fear appeal,
