A Christmas Carol Stave One Notes

Stave One:

• Marley was scrooges business partner - dead 7 years ago, Scrooge was the only one at the funeral
• We meet Scrooge on Xmas Eve where we learn that he is a misanthropist
• He treats his clerk, Bob Cratchitt poorly - wont even put the fire on!
• Charity collectors come, but Scrooge refuses to give them money, saying that workhouses are where the poor should go
• Scrooge believes in the inhumane theory that if the poor die, it'll help solve the over-population issues so it's a good thing and should happen sooner - Dickens is critising this view
• Fred, his nephew visits, wishing him a merry Xmas. Scrooge scolds him for being happy because he's "poor" so how can he be?
• A young carol singer knocks at the door after being told not to, Scrooge shows no emotion and threatens violence
