  • Helps broadcast the messege of the tradition of christmas. Dickens believed it should be a time of peace and goodwill for everyone no matter their social status
  • Some seem christmas as a time of greed, much like scrooge, where as others see it a time to be genourous and help others 
  • poverty: Due to the industrial revoulution, many people live in cramped spaces and the cities were over populated. Crime was very evident in the cities. Many living conditions were unsanitary. Sewers werent coping with the amount of people.
  • Rich busniess men exploited workers and made them work long hours with no breaks.(scrooge represents this)
  • 1834-new poor law introduced-in order to recieve financial assitance, they must move into a workhouse. poor pelople were seen in lazy. Dickens compares them to prisons. He was against them and like in oliver twist he crirtises them.
  • Education is a way out of poverty.
