  • The speaker needs to prove that his mother is the legitimate child of his maternal grandfather.
  • This is because of Pericles' Citizenship Law, which says that you need to have two married legitimate Athenian parents in order to be legitimate and inherit the oikos/household. (see Euphiletus)
