5.3 Is the climate changing? 

Evidence for climate change

Evidence from personal memory is anecdotal- it is unreliable and short term.

  • Temperature records

    • Temperature records are important as they show change in one place over time however they only go back 400 years max and the equipment used is less accurate than the things used now.

  • Peat bogs

    • We can look at plant samples from peat bogs were the anaerobic conditions stop decay. It is useful because:

      • Plants produce so much pollen that there will be a layer of pollen each season

      • pollen has a tough outer layer resistant to decay

      • each species of plant has a very distinctive type of pollen and can therefore be easily identified

      • it produces layers that are
