 1) Human insulin

Until recent times insulin was extracted from the pancreatic tissue of slaughtered pigs. However, this wasn't very useful as...

  • It was not identical to human insulin
  • It was less effective
  • It was very expensive

Instead of using this method scientists began focusing on new methods to produce insulin


  • mRNA is seperated from pancreatic tissue
  • A complimentary strand is synthesised using reverse transcriptase
  • With the addition of DNA polymerase and DNA nucleotides a second strand is built. Now a copy of the original gene has been made and is now called the CDNA gene
  • Sticky ends are added which are complimentary to those on the plasmid
  • A plasmid is cut open with restriction enzyme and mixed with
