• a pentose sugar (5 carbon atoms)
• a nitrogenous base (contains nitrogen)
• a phosphate group
• all contains the elements C,H,O,N,P

the importance:

• monomers that make up DNA and RNA
• DNA is used to store genetic info
• RNA makes proteins from DNA instructions
