2.1.3 - Explain functions of two hormones in human behaviour

Definition

Behaviour is defined as being any response to a stimulus.

Hormones are chemicals released by glands in the endocrine system which affect particular cells and organs. The endocrine system releases hormones into the bloodstream in order for them to affect behaviour.

Explain concept

Cortisol

Cortisol is a hormone released when humans become stressed. It is released by the adrenal cortex and prolonged secretion can lead to a damaged immune system.

Testosterone

Testosterone is a hormone associated with typically masculine behaviours. It is released by the gonads.

Study - Kiecolt-Glaser et al (1984)

Tested the role that cortisol (hormone) has on immune system effectiveness (behaviour)
