2. Lenin's Foreign Policy

1. CONTRADICTORY AIMS:

Under the new Bolshevik regime, Lenin had two main aim's:

-To protect the new state from hostile capitalist states and to ensure it's survivall.

- To promote the spread of communism through the Comintern.  

2. PEACEFUL COEXISTANCE [DEFENSIVE]

Ever the pragmatist, Lenin was ready to adopt policy to changing situations.

After foreign policy was revised after a defeat by the poles, Lenin was forced to accept peaceful co-existance rather than spreading a revolution. 

 

3. ISOLATION [DEFENSIVE\ SECURITY]

Alone in a hostile world, the Soviet Union was vurnerable to attack and Lenin sought to overcome this. 

Lenin's main aim was to divide imperialist countries to prevent them from forming a capitalist bloc against Soviet Russia, 

4. THE TREATY OF BREAST LITOVSK 1918 

Trotsky announced that Russia would stop the war but would not sign the peace and withdrew this delegation saying there would be a state of 'no war. no peace.'
