Why did republicans win?

Attempted assassination:

John Hinckley Jr. pulled out a gun and fired 6 shots in quick succession at Reagan who didn't have a bullet proof vest on. One bullet hit the Press Secretary, police officer and McCarthy acted as a human shield and was hit in the abdomen. Reagan had been shot, passed out loss of blood, narrowly missed his heart. Made humerous comments and carried on.

1981 budget:
