The 1950 Election
Saw a larger turnout of voters
Both parties accepted the Welfare State, reforms from Labour and a need for alliance with the USA and NATO.
Conservatives had gained popularity becuase:
Party organisation had been improved by Lord Woolton. There were better run and more active local Conservative parties locally and now funding of over £1 million had been raised.
Government was seen as being incompetent over the failure of a scheme to encourage ground nut growing in West Africa in 1949. Huge investment was made but £36 million was wasted.
Well organised opposition to further nationalisation…
